Candidates applying for Forest Watcher must satisfy the prescribed physical standards.

How to Apply for TNPSC Group 4 2026?

Candidates must apply only through online mode.

The application process involves:

  1. One Time Registration (OTR)
  2. Filling the Group IV online application
  3. Uploading/entering the required details
  4. Selecting applicable post options
  5. Checking the application preview
  6. Final submission
  7. Payment of examination fee, wherever applicable
  8. Saving the Application Number/Applicant ID

Candidates who already have a valid OTR can proceed directly to the examination application.

The Commission specifies that One Time Registration is not an application for a post. Candidates must submit a separate application for each recruitment/examination they wish to apply for.

TNPSC OTR Fee and Examination Fee

The notification provides for:

One Time Registration

₹150

The OTR is valid for five years from the date of registration.

Examination Fee

₹100, unless the candidate is eligible for fee exemption.

The examination fee is payable through online modes such as:

  • Net Banking
  • Credit Card
  • Debit Card
  • UPI

Offline payment through Demand Draft or Postal Order is not accepted.

Candidates should carefully choose whether they are claiming fee concession because the notification contains specific provisions regarding free chances and fee exemption.

Age Limit

The age limit varies according to the post and community/category.

For many posts, the minimum age is 18 years.

However, certain posts have higher minimum age requirements.

For example:

  • VAO – minimum age 21 years
  • Forest Guard with Driving Licence – minimum age 21 years
  • Forest Watcher – minimum age 18 years
  • Executive Officer Grade IV – minimum age 25 years

For several posts, the maximum age differs depending on community/category and applicable concessions.

Candidates belonging to SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM) and BCM categories receive the age concessions prescribed in the notification.

A particularly important provision is that for certain reserved-category candidates possessing educational qualifications higher than the minimum prescribed qualification, no maximum age limit is applicable subject to the conditions specified in the notification.

Candidates must therefore check the exact age condition applicable to the post + community + special category before submitting the application.

Educational Qualification

The educational qualification is not identical for every Group IV post.

Several posts require the Minimum General Educational Qualification/SSLC.

For example, a number of Junior Assistant, Bill Collector and related posts require SSLC or the prescribed Minimum General Educational Qualification.

Some posts require higher qualifications.

Examples include:

Junior Assistant – SIDCO

A degree from a University recognised by the University Grants Commission is prescribed.

Junior Assistant – Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies

A degree with Diploma in Co-operative Management, or Co-operation as a special subject in the degree, is prescribed.

Junior Assistant – Police Housing Corporation

Any degree from a recognised University is prescribed.

Junior Assistant – Power Finance

B.Com. degree is prescribed.

Junior Assistant – Medicinal Plant Farms

Degree plus Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation is prescribed.

Junior Assistant (Accounts)

B.Com. degree is prescribed.

The notification contains post-wise educational and technical qualification requirements, so candidates should not assume that possession of SSLC alone makes them eligible for every post.

Typist Posts – Important Qualification

Candidates applying for Typist posts must pay special attention to the Government Technical Examination in Typewriting.

Depending on the post, requirements include combinations of:

  • Tamil Typewriting
  • English Typewriting
  • Higher/Senior Grade
  • Lower/Junior Grade
  • Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation

For some posts, the prescribed computer qualification can be acquired within the period specified by the notification if the candidate does not possess it at the time of application, subject to the conditions mentioned in the notification.

Therefore, Typist candidates should carefully read the qualification prescribed for their specific post code.

Steno-Typist Posts

Steno-Typist posts have additional requirements relating to both:

  • Typewriting
  • Shorthand

The notification specifies different combinations of Tamil and English Typewriting/Shorthand grades for different organisations.

Candidates should not apply based only on their general educational qualification; they must verify the exact technical qualification prescribed for the particular Steno-Typist post.

Forest Watcher – Special Requirements

Forest Watcher is subject to physical standards.

The notification specifies minimum height requirements of:

Category Male Female/Third Gender
Other than ST 163 cm 150 cm
ST 152 cm 145 cm

The prescribed chest measurement for eligible male candidates is:

  • Normal chest: 79 cm
  • Expansion: 5 cm

Candidates must satisfy the prescribed physical standards and produce the required certificate from the competent medical authority.

Forest Guard with Driving Licence

The Forest Guard with Driving Licence post has additional eligibility requirements.

Candidates must possess:

  • Higher Secondary qualification with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology or Botany as one of the subjects
  • Valid driving licence issued by the competent Transport Authority
  • At least three years' experience in driving LMV/HMV after obtaining the licence
  • Basic knowledge of automobile mechanism
  • First-aid certificate from a recognised organisation in Tamil Nadu

The notification also specifies physical and vision standards for this post.

Knowledge of Tamil

Candidates should possess adequate knowledge of Tamil on the date of notification.

The notification considers a candidate to possess adequate knowledge of Tamil if, among other prescribed routes, the candidate has studied Tamil as one of the languages in SSLC/HSC/Degree or studied the High School Course in Tamil medium, or has passed the TNPSC Second Class Language Test in Tamil.

Candidates may be required to produce supporting documents.

TNPSC Group 4 Exam Pattern 2026

The Group IV examination will be conducted as a single-stage written examination.

The examination consists of one paper.

Complete Exam Pattern

Part Subject Questions Maximum Marks
Part A Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test 100 150
Part B General Studies 75 150
Part C Aptitude and Mental Ability 25 Included in 150
Total 200 300

Duration

3 Hours

Examination Mode

OMR

Type

Objective

The standard for General Studies and Aptitude/Mental Ability is SSLC level.

Very Important: Tamil Paper is a Qualifying-Cum-Scoring Paper

Candidates must pay special attention to Part A.

The Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test contains:

100 questions – 150 marks

Candidates must secure at least 40%, i.e. 60 marks, in Part A.

Only when the candidate secures the minimum qualifying marks in Part A will Part B and Part C be evaluated.

The marks secured in Part A + Part B + Part C will then be considered for ranking.

This makes the Tamil paper extremely important.

It should not be treated as merely a qualifying paper because its marks also contribute to the final ranking.

General Studies and Aptitude & Mental Ability

Part B contains:

75 questions – General Studies

Part C contains:

25 questions – Aptitude and Mental Ability

Together, Part B and Part C account for 150 marks.

Questions in Part B and Part C are set in both Tamil and English.

The syllabus is provided in Annexure III of the notification. The Commission also states that the unit-wise distribution of questions is indicative and may be marginally increased or decreased if necessary.

Special Provision for Differently Abled Candidates

Differently Abled candidates who have studied English only as the subject in the Board/University can avail themselves of exemption from the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test and instead opt for General English at SSLC Standard, subject to the conditions and documentation prescribed in the notification.

They must secure 40% or 60 marks in that paper.

The required disability certificate must be furnished/uploaded as prescribed.

Selection Process

The Group IV examination is primarily based on the written examination.

The Commission states that the merit/ranking list will be prepared based on the total marks obtained in the written examination.

Where candidates obtain equal marks, the notification provides tie-breaking procedures.

For example:

  1. Higher qualification is considered.
  2. For posts requiring Typewriting/Shorthand, higher technical qualification receives preference.
  3. If marks and qualification are also equal, the older candidate gets preference.
  4. If age is also equal, the candidate who submitted the application earlier gets preference.

Certificate Verification and Counselling

Candidates will undergo onscreen certificate verification before physical certificate verification and counselling.

The Commission will shortlist candidates based on:

  • Minimum qualifying marks
  • Rule of reservation
  • Post-specific requirements

For VAO, Junior Assistant, Typist and Steno-Typist posts, candidates are shortlisted for onscreen certificate verification according to the ratios prescribed in the notification.

For Forest Guard with Driving Licence and Forest Watcher, the notification specifies a 1:6 ratio for all categories for the relevant stages.

Reservation

The rule of reservation applies separately to each post, except for shortfall vacancies.

The detailed community-wise reservation provisions are provided in Annexure II.

Candidates claiming reservation, PSTM, Destitute Widow, Persons with Benchmark Disability, Ex-Servicemen or other special categories must possess and produce the prescribed supporting documents.

Incorrect or unsupported claims can result in rejection of candidature.

Persons Studied in Tamil Medium – PSTM

The notification contains provisions relating to Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (PSTM).

Candidates claiming PSTM status must satisfy the definition and educational requirements prescribed under the applicable law and must furnish appropriate documentary evidence.

The notification also refers to the Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (PSTM) Amendment Act No. 12 of 2026.

Candidates claiming PSTM reservation/priority should therefore read the relevant provisions carefully rather than relying only on the medium of instruction stated in one certificate.

Application Correction Window

The correction window is particularly important.

After the application closing date, candidates will get a three-day correction period:

09 November 2026 to 11 November 2026

During this period, candidates can edit details in their online application.

After the correction-window deadline, no further modification will be permitted.

Candidates should therefore check:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Community
  • Educational qualification
  • Post options
  • Technical qualification
  • PSTM claim
  • Special category claims
  • Photograph
  • Signature
  • Communication details

before final submission.

Post Options – Important for Forest Posts

Candidates applying for Group IV should carefully select the post options concerning:

  • Forest Guard with Driving Licence
  • Forest Watcher

Candidates who do not wish to be considered for these posts can select the option for posts other than Forest Guard with Driving Licence/Forest Watcher.

Candidates willing to be considered for all the notified posts can select “All the Posts.”

This option should be selected carefully while submitting the application.

Documents Candidates Should Keep Ready

Candidates should keep the required documents ready before completing the application.

Depending on the post/category claimed, these may include:

  • SSLC certificate/mark sheet
  • HSC certificate/mark sheet
  • Degree certificate
  • Provisional degree certificate
  • Consolidated mark sheet
  • Typewriting certificate
  • Shorthand certificate
  • Computer on Office Automation certificate
  • Community certificate
  • PSTM supporting documents
  • Disability certificate
  • Destitute Widow certificate
  • Ex-Servicemen documents
  • Driving licence
  • Driving experience certificate
  • First-aid certificate
  • Physical standards certificate, wherever applicable

The notification specifically states that failure to upload documents supporting eligibility or claims can result in rejection of candidature.

Examination Hall – Banned Items

Candidates must be extremely careful about prohibited items.

The notification prohibits candidates from taking items such as:

  • Mobile phones
  • Pagers
  • Electronic devices
  • Smart watches
  • Digital watches with prohibited functions
  • Bluetooth devices
  • Cameras
  • Smart glasses
  • Devices with communication/storage capabilities
  • Books
  • Notes
  • Loose sheets
  • Mathematical/drawing instruments
  • Handbags
  • Wallets/purses and other prohibited items

Candidates possessing prohibited items may be prevented from writing the examination and may face invalidation of the answer sheet, debarment or rejection of candidature.

Important Advice for TNPSC Group 4 Aspirants

1. Do not wait until the last day

The Commission itself advises candidates to apply well before the closing date because technical problems, website traffic or internet connectivity can affect submission.

2. Tamil preparation is extremely important

Since Part A requires 60/150 marks, candidates must prepare Tamil seriously.

Moreover, the marks obtained in Part A contribute to ranking.

3. Check the post-specific qualification

Group IV is not a single qualification recruitment.

Different posts require different qualifications.

A candidate eligible for one post may not necessarily be eligible for another.

4. Technical qualification matters

Typist and Steno-Typist aspirants should carefully verify their Typewriting and Shorthand grades.

5. Check age based on the exact post

Do not calculate eligibility based only on the general Group IV age limit.

The age requirement varies by post and category.

6. Keep certificates ready

Candidates should not wait until certificate verification to search for qualification, community, PSTM or special-category documents.

7. Save the Application Number

After successful submission/payment, candidates should retain the Application Number/Applicant ID for future reference.

TNPSC Group 4 2026 – Preparation Strategy

A practical preparation strategy can be divided into three sections.

Part A – Tamil

Focus on:

  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Literature
  • Comprehension
  • Tamil usage
  • SSLC-level Tamil syllabus
  • Previous TNPSC-style questions

Since Tamil carries 150 marks, strong performance here can significantly contribute to the final score.

Part B – General Studies

Prepare systematically for:

  • General Science
  • Current affairs
  • Indian polity
  • Indian economy
  • Indian history
  • Geography
  • Tamil Nadu-related topics
  • Development administration
  • Other subjects specified in the official syllabus

Part C – Aptitude & Mental Ability

Regular practice is essential for:

  • Basic arithmetic
  • Logical reasoning
  • Numerical ability
  • Mental ability
  • Data interpretation-type questions where applicable

The key is not simply completing the syllabus but developing speed + accuracy for a three-hour OMR examination.
